What it is like being Latina and not speaking Spanish fluently

Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from September 15 through October 15. It celebrates the history and culture of people with ancestry in Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking countries of the Americas. The observance started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week. September 15 is an important day for many Latin American countries. Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua — celebrate their independence on the 15^th. It is a month of celebration, culture and love. It is also a time I realize one of my biggest flaws.

Ting Wit Da Glo: Listen to Lulu Be.’s New Track ‘Rude Tings’

“I be da queen of da pack, I be da ting wit da glo.” Back with a new banger and a new name, Lulu Be. (formerly known as Leah Be.) finally released her first solo track titled  “Rude Tings” produced by Lanre. The song brings a fresh new sound for Chicago, combining all the elements to create the perfect dance track, but with enough bars to even have the hip-hop fiends boppin their heads.

Chicago Eats: Kanela Breakfast Club

We’re big on brunch over here. If you’re looking for a cute spot with bomb food made with locally grown ingredients and even better mimosa deals, then Kanela [Kuh-nel-uh] is where it’s at. The restaurant has five locations: Wicker Park, Lakeview, Old Town, Streeterville, and Andersonville being the newest one. The Andersonville location opened up about 4 months ago and already is serving up its reputation as a go-to brunch hangout.

All The Pretty People At Afropunk NYC 2016

Another year, another case of the FOMO. We played ourselves in not going to Afropunk this year, but we’re gonna keep telling ourselves there’s always next year. The 2-day festival held in Brooklyn’s Commodore Park brought in so many beautiful people from around the world and it was every photographer’s and fashionista’s dream. There was so much style and SO MUCH MELANIN in one place; many were even hashtagging the event #blackaugust. Through our professional creeping skills we went and found some of our favorite Afropunk looks. After a while it got overwhelming because we wanted to use all of them. Around The Way Girl: Michelle Janayea

I just feel like a pixie goddess floating through life sometimes. No one believed Michelle when she told her friends and family back home in Providence, Rhode Island that she was going to pack her bags and move to a city she knew nothing of. She didn’t have any friends, she didn’t have any family, but she had the intuition that Chicago was going to be where dream as a fashion designer would begin. Five years later and a double bachelors degree in fashion design and fashion business from Colombia College, Michelle Janayea has made Chicago her home as well as her mark as the “Queer Black Pixie Goddess Fashion Activist.”
